We all, at some point in our lives, face loss—whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or even a way of life we once knew. And yet, despite its universality, grief can be one of the loneliest journeys we take.But today, I want to talk about a specific kind of grief that often goes unspoken—disenfranchised grief. It’s the grief that doesn’t always fit neatly into society’s boxes, and that makes it harder for people to validate or even recognise it.A few years ago, a dear friend of mine lost his father. Now, this wasn't your typical father-son relationship. My friend had grown up without much contact from his dad, despite making effort after effort to reconnect throughout the years. In his teens, into his twenties and thirties, he kept reaching out—calls, texts, even an invitation to his own wedding. His father never responded.It wasn’t until weeks after his father's passing that my friend received a text from a distant relative with the news.He grieved. He grieved for the father he lost but, more profoundly, for the father he never truly had. Flowers and condolences poured in, but beneath it all, he wrestled with guilt, regret, and a complicated sense of loss. That, my friends, is disenfranchised grief.Disenfranchised grief is the kind of grief that isn't widely recognised by society. It’s when the relationship you had, the circumstances of the death, or the way you express your grief doesn’t meet the typical expectations.Think about situations like losing a former partner, a pet, or even someone you had a strained relationship with—like my friend. When you’re not sure if your grief will be understood, it can feel as if you’re mourning in silence.So, how do we navigate this kind of grief? Here are some steps that can help you, or someone you care about, process disenfranchised grief: Validate Mixed Emotions: "It’s okay to feel conflicted. You can feel relief, anger, and sadness all at once, and that's a normal response."Normalise the Experience: "Your grief doesn’t have to look a certain way. It’s personal, and it’s real. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach."Encourage Expression: "Talk about your feelings, whether it’s anger, regret, or relief. Don’t fear judgment. All of it deserves a voice."Explore Unresolved Issues: "Sometimes, the grief isn’t just about the loss itself, but about unresolved pain. That’s where healing can truly begin."Grieving is as personal as it is complex, and you should never feel like your pain is invalid because it doesn’t match what others expect. I’ve seen many clients over the years who have struggled with complicated feelings of grief, and I want to say this—it’s okay to feel what you feel. Your grief is valid. You don’t have to grieve in silence. And you don’t have to fit into a Mold of what others think grief should look like. If you’ve experienced a loss, even one where the relationship was strained or difficult, it’s still a loss. It’s still worthy of your compassion. Remember, finding the right support, whether it’s from a therapist, a friend, or even your own reflection, can be like finding a soulmate. It might take some time, but when you find someone who understands your grief and can support you—hold them tight.So, be kind to yourself. Grieve in your own way. When I'm out promoting my services, I get asked a lot, especially by GPs: What’s the difference between all the mental health professionals in Australia? In today's video, We’ll cover everything from qualifications to their roles, who can prescribe medications, who can diagnose, and what each professional typically charges. But here's the thing – finding the right therapist is a bit like dating. It might take a few tries, but it's a game-changer when you find the right one! laughs Alright, let’s dive in!&nbsp; What is Psychology?Before we get into the different professionals, let’s talk about psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It explores everything from how we think, feel, and act to how we interact with others and the world around us. Mental Health practitioners apply this understanding to help people manage mental health issues, overcome difficulties, and improve their overall well-being. Psychology branches out into many specialties like clinical, counselling, forensic, and educational psychology.Now, let’s explore the types of professionals in the mental health space, starting with the psychiatrist."&nbsp; Psychiatrist "First up, we have psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. They have completed a medical degree, followed by years of specialist training in psychiatry. This means they’re able to diagnose complex mental illnesses and prescribe medications to manage conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and more.Psychiatrists work within a medical model, meaning they focus on how biological factors influence mental health. Some may also offer talk therapy, but they’re typically known for medication management and assessing more severe mental health issues.Professional Association: Psychiatrists are registered with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).Fees &amp; Access: Psychiatric consultations can range from $200–$500 per session. You’ll need a referral from a GP to access a psychiatrist, and Medicare rebates are available for certain sessions."&nbsp; Psychologist"Next, we have psychologists. These are professionals trained in understanding human behaviour and mental processes. They help people work through issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship problems using therapeutic techniques. Psychologists don’t prescribe medication – their primary focus is on therapy.There are two key types of psychologists you might come across:Clinical Psychologists: They have a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and specialise in assessing and treating mental illnesses.General Psychologists: They hold a general psychology degree but can still provide therapy and support for mental health issues.Professional Association: Psychologists are registered with the Australian Psychological Society (APS) or the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).Fees &amp; Access: Fees typically range between $120–$250 per session, depending on their specialisation. You can access a psychologist through a GP’s Mental Health Care Plan, which gives you a rebate for a certain number of sessions under Medicare."&nbsp; Mental Health Social Worker"Next, we have mental health social workers. These professionals hold qualifications in social work, along with specialised training in mental health. They provide counselling and therapy, particularly for people dealing with complex life issues like trauma, abuse, or chronic mental health conditions. Mental health social workers often focus on the broader social and environmental factors that influence a person’s mental well-being.They don’t prescribe medication or make medical diagnoses, but they can provide assessments, therapy, and referrals to other services.Professional Association: They are accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and may hold a Mental Health Accreditation.Fees &amp; Access: Their fees are typically between $100–$180 per session. Medicare rebates are available through a GP referral under the Mental Health Care Plan."&nbsp; Occupational Therapist (OT) "Occupational Therapists, or OTs, specialise in helping people improve their daily functioning, particularly those whose mental health affects their ability to work, take care of themselves, or engage in life fully. OTs with mental health training focus on practical skills to improve well-being, such as coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and routines.They work with people who struggle with conditions like ADHD, autism, or chronic mental health conditions that impact day-to-day activities.Professional Association: OTs are registered with Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) and AHPRA.Fees &amp; Access: Their fees generally range from $90–$200 per session. Access can be through private referral or NDIS for those with a disability."&nbsp; Mental Health Nurse "Mental health nurses are registered nurses with specialised training in mental health. They work in hospitals, clinics, and sometimes community settings, often supporting people with severe and chronic mental health conditions. They can administer medications, provide therapy, and offer ongoing care.They work closely with psychiatrists and other mental health professionals to provide holistic care.Professional Association: They’re registered under the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN).Fees &amp; Access: Fees vary based on service location. Mental health nurses can be accessed via hospitals, GPs, and community health centres, with Medicare or insurance rebates often covering the cost."&nbsp; Counsellor/Therapist"Now onto counsellors and therapists. These professionals provide emotional and psychological support through talk therapy. Unlike psychologists, counsellors don’t require a specific degree in psychology, though many hold qualifications in counselling or related fields. They are great for short-term or solution-focused therapy to work through life challenges, stress, or relationship issues.However, they are not qualified to diagnose or prescribe medication.Professional Association: Many counsellors are registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).Fees &amp; Access: Counselling fees are generally around $80–$150 per session. Yesterday, Sunday, I had the privilege of reading a passage from John chapter 9 that deeply resonated with me. As a psychotherapist who believes spiritual health is integral to overall well-being, I wanted to share my reflections. At the Core of Therapy is Healing and Repair. I believe in the holistic well-being of the mind, soul, and body. John chapter 9 tells the story of a man born blind. Here’s a summary: Jesus encounters a man who was blind from birth. His disciples ask if the man’s blindness was due to his or his parent’s sin. Jesus responds that man’s condition is not about sin but so that God’s works may be displayed in him. Jesus then heals the man, restoring his sight. However, the Pharisees and religious leaders question him and his family, doubting the legitimacy of his healing and his connection to Jesus. The man boldly declares his belief in Jesus, and because of this, he is cast out of the synagogue. Jesus later finds him and reveals Himself entirely to him, and the man worships Jesus. Have you blamed your parents or past circumstances for your struggles? Do you struggle to fully embrace your healing and blessings because of the rejection or doubt of others? If you’ve faced these pains—blaming your past, questioning your worth, or feeling rejected for your blessings—this message is for you. This newsletter focuses on shifting from blame to trust, embracing God’s grace, and stepping confidently into the new season God is leading you into, even if it means losing relationships. Key Lessons from the Story: 1. Quit the Blame Game: Your past isn’t necessarily a result of your parents’ actions or mistakes. Stop assigning blame. Instead, ask God to use your experiences, including childhood struggles, to reveal His grace and mercy. Seek God’s perspective on your journey and ask Him to use your experiences to bring glory to His name. 2.Rejection is a Sign of Your Blessing: Like the blind man cast out of the synagogue after his healing, some people will reject you because they can’t comprehend your transformation. Accept that some relationships may end when you step into God’s favour. This is not a setback but rather a confirmation of God’s favour. 3. Your Healing is Not for Everyone to Understand: When people question your healing or transformation as the Pharisees did, they aren’t truly for you. Surround yourself with people who celebrate your growth and God’s work. 4. Avoid Envious People: Stay closely connected only with people who genuinely want you to do well in life. When people reject you out of envy or disbelief in your blessings, stay away from them. Don’t force yourself to stay in associations that no longer align with your new season. 5. Jesus Meets You in Rejection: When rejection comes, embrace it as an opportunity to deepen your relationship with Christ. He will guide you, answer your questions, and call you into a closer walk with Him. 6. Embrace Your Faith Over Logic: Keep your faith strong and trust in God, not in your abilities or networks. God honours your faith, not your qualifications or connections. Stay firm in your belief in Him. 7. Don’t Dim Your Light: Don’t let others’ doubts or rejections dim the light God has placed in you. It helps you see that your value isn't about what you do but who you are. You're worthy of love and respect, just by being you. Let's remember that together, especially on tough days.Striving for Excellence versus PerfectionismIf you often find yourself chasing the elusive spectre of perfection, or you've set towering standards for yourself—standards that remain unmet despite others' praise—you might be high-functioning or even an overachiever. It's crucial to distinguish between striving for excellence and succumbing to perfectionism. Excellence means doing the best you can with the resources and constraints you have, feeling content with your efforts. Perfectionism, on the other hand, involves pushing beyond limits to meet self-imposed or external expectations, often leading to feelings of failure if those standards aren't met.Cultural and Personal ContextThis relentless pursuit often traces back to a childhood devoid of necessary validation, especially from parental figures. Cultural expectations can exacerbate this, as I've experienced firsthand as a Nigerian from a middle-class background. With a mother who was an educational psychologist and a school principal, and a father who was a civil engineer, the bar for academic achievement was set high in our family. Despite diligent efforts, anything short of top grades meant we fell short of receiving approval from our parents, teachers, and community—a scenario all too common in performance-oriented environments.ConclusionPerformance-based self-esteem can be deeply rooted in our past, but it's not a life sentence. By recognizing these patterns and understanding their origins, we can begin to shift our focus from external validation to internal acceptance.
